Why Sending Your Team to a Training Class Won't Change Anything

It took years to build the habits your organization runs on today. One class will not change them. Here is what actually does.

We have a tendency to think that if we take the class, a magical transformation will happen. I have seen it for decades. A company sends thirty people to a two-day workshop, everyone comes back energized, and six weeks later nothing has changed. The old habits won. Not because the people did not want to change, but because change does not work that way.

It took years to get the way you think. A class does not undo that. Cycles of learning do.

Think about how real learning actually works. In school, your math education did not start with calculus. It built foundations that built on themselves, progressively, over years. We lay foundations that build upon themselves and build higher to progressive complexity. Every cycle connects to what came before. That is how you build something that sticks.

Sports work the same way. Nobody hands you a marathon bib on day one. In basketball, coaches build your ability to box out, to rebound, to move without the ball. They build those fundamentals before anything else. The same principle applies to organizations. You cannot skip to the advanced work. The fundamentals have to be real first.

What we have found, working with organizations over many years, is that cycles of learning are what create real and lasting change. You start with the fundamentals. You repeat the cycle, connecting the content each time, building habit and building trust in your own ability to do the work. Early on, the Eureka Ranch team carries most of the load. But as quickly as possible, your people develop the ability to lead it themselves. That is by design. You are going to need this forever.

When are you done? The honest answer is never. Because the world is not going to stop changing. The organizations that build this capability — that get genuinely good at continuous learning and continuous improvement — are the ones that keep getting stronger regardless of what the environment throws at them. The ones that rely on periodic training events stay fragile.

The question is not whether your team can learn. Of course they can. The question is whether you are giving them a system that actually teaches them, or just a class that feels like one.
