Most innovation efforts fail—not because of bad ideas, but because of broken systems.

This certificate experience introduces a new way to think about innovation, inspired by the systems thinking of Dr. W. Edwards Deming. Whether you’re focused on people, products, or processes, you’ll gain insight into how a smarter system can drive results.

Why System Driven Innovation Works

500% more “disruptive” ideas than brainstorming

6X faster time-to-market with higher employee engagement

80% reduction in innovation risk through better systems

The Innovation Engineering White Belt Program Certificate experience introduces a different way to think about innovation and how we work together, based on the systems thinking of Dr. W. Edwards Deming.  This White Belt is about awareness, not training. You won’t walk away an expert – but you will walk away thinking differently.

You’ll explore how to:

  • Identify invisible reasons that kill engagement
  • Fix ineffective and inefficient human systems
  • Shift from stuck ideas to a smarter innovation pipeline

What You’ll Get:

  • Innovation Engineering White Belt Certificate
  • Shareable White Belt badge
  • Individual Feedback on your submissions by a certified Innovation Engineering Black Belt

How it works:

This self-paced experience includes:

  • 3 video sessions (60 min total)

  • 1 simple reflection question after each video

Session Previews

SESSION 1

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

Why do over 60% of employees say “it’s not my job”? This session reveals the hidden systems that disengage teams—and how fixing them sparks motivation and pride.

NPS Score: 74 (on par with Apple and Amazon)

Research finds that less than 40% of employees are actively engaged in their work.  The consequences: absenteeism, safety incidents, turnover and poor work quality.   When asked why they are not proactively engaged employees over 6 in 10 employees say “they don’t know what to do” and or “don’t see it as their job.“

Experimentation with employee groups across education levels and job titles finds that engagement is ignited through intrinsic motivation.  The starting place for this is first focusing on “stopping the stupid” work systems that prevents and disrupts employees ability to do their work.

This approach has received “Net promoter” scores from employees of 74 – equaling the ratings of world class organizations such as Apple, Amazon and Southwest Airlines.

SESSION 2

HUMAN WORK SYSTEMS

Most managers lose 3.5 hours per day to preventable mistakes. This module helps you diagnose broken SOPs, digital systems, and communications—and rethink how work gets done.

The average manager wastes 3.5 hours a day dealing with employee mistakes and broken work systems.  Of these, nearly 80% are due to flawed work systems such as: 1) Flawed SOP,  2) Broken Digital Systems, 3) Bureaucracy, and or 4) Poor Communications.  By applying a system mindset to your innovation process you can increase speed to market 6X while decreasing risk by 80%.

SESSION 3

INNOVATION PIPELINE

Why do most “innovation systems” deliver incremental changes at best? This session introduces tools proven to 5X your big ideas and boost speed with less risk.

Innovation processes such as Stage Gate have seen wide spread adoption because they bring discipline to innovation.   System Thinking builds on that discipline with a mindset, tools and work systems that help organizations create and accelerate disruptive innovations with increased speed and decreased risk.  The methods taught in this session been validated in academic papers and industry practice as delivering 5X more “big ideas” than classic brainstorming.
