A Management System for

Companies - Colleges - Communities

Increase Innovation Speed (up to 6x)

& Decrease Innovation Risk (by 30 to 80%)

The Innovation Engineering Management System is a scientific method for accelerating more profitable products, services, customers, markets and processes.  The system applies the system mindset and principles of Dr. W. Edwards Deming to innovation and growth.  The IEMS was developed and optimized  by the US Department of Commerce’s NIST/MEP System,  the University of Maine and Eureka! Ranch.  Importantly, it’s also THE system all three organizations use to manage their innovation.

The system and tools were developed over the past 25 years based on quantitative study on what drove the success and failure of over 26,000 innovations.  In addition, process implementation was optimized through measurement and quality control charting of over 6,000 innovation teams at top innovation companies like Nike, Walt Disney, Procter & Gamble, Hewlett Packard, Johnson & Johnson, College Board, Hartford Insurance, American Express and Schlumberger.  They were then adapted to make them reliable and reproducible for small to mid sized companies as well through a four year process of working with the NIST/MEP network and over 7,000 business leaders.

Innovation Engineering Leadership Institute:

This is a three-day sampler that teaches your top managers how to increase speed and decrease risk with innovations.  It’s a graduate school level course in the Innovation Engineering tools for Creating, Communicating and Commercializing meaningfully unique ideas.    It’s a “hands on” accelerated learning course.  Participants learn by doing.  During the day they practice on case studies, during the evening students build confidence in their understanding of the system and tools by applying the learning to growing new customers and leading established customers.

Added Benefits:  The primary purpose of the Leadership Institute is to teach and build confidence in the system and tools.  However, participants report a number of added benefits:

  • Breakthroughs on Existing Problems and Opportunities.  The program teaches with case studies during the day.  During the evening, students build confidence in the system and tools by applying the learning to Very Important Problems or Opportunities within their department, division or the company.   It is not uncommon for “Eureka” moments to occur during these evening homework sessions.
  • A Common Language that Breaks Down Silos.  The program teaches everyone the importance of simultaneous engineering of customer promise, product reality and profit formula.
  • Acceptance and Tools for Leveraging Diversity  Fundamental to the program is a teaching of tools that everyone can use - not matter what their thinking style.   Tools are provided for everyone from the logical “left brain” engineer as well as the most “right brain” sales or marketing person.
